Earlier on the blog I talked about posting frequent updates of my work, which hasn’t really happened so far. Now that I’m two months into my diploma thesis (at the ICD¬†and ITKE) I can finally show you what I’ve been working on and what I’m planning to do in the upcoming four months.

Connecting Intelligence

“Connecting Intelligence” is a project based on the assumption that material behavior can be integrated in the form finding process through geometry-inherent assembly information. The project aims to investigate both the possibilities and the impact of integrating digital fabrication and material behavior in architectural design, using the example of lightweight plywood timber construction for the development of elastically bent plate morphologies based on robotically fabricated finger joints.

The robotic fabrication of finger joints at varying angles and dimensions was first explored in 2010 and later led to the development of the ICD / ITKE Research Pavilion 2011. It is part of an ongoing research at the ICD about methodologies for the computational exploration of machinic, or more precisely, robotic morphospaces (have a look at the AD magazine 82(2) “Material Computation”). For my diploma thesis I’m now focusing on how the geometry of curved connections can be used to elastically bend initially planar elements during assembly for geometrically rigid and possibly bending active plate morphologies. The aim of the project is to develop a modular, multi-layered material system incorporating the above mentioned fabrication and material constraints, as well as structural and architectural demands. In conclusion, it will be interesting to see the impact on architectural design, which I will demonstrate through an exemplary building.

During the last two months I’ve been focusing on the development of new fabrication methods for robotically producing curved finger joint connections. The robot is now using a saw blade for a less complex, yet more precise fabrication process.

I’ve made several prototypes to test material behavior and geometric consistency with the digital model and am now approaching the question as to how the developed geometric differentiation can be used to find plate structure systems with a particular performance capacity. I will soon post some ideas on that.
